How to Prep for Laser Hair Removal

When it comes to long-term hair removal, there’s no substitute for laser treatments. A series of appointments can offer months or years of silky-smooth, hair-free skin. But for optimal results, you’ll need to adequately prepare your skin for laser hair removal. Join us for a guide to laser hair removal so you know what to expect!

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal delivers semi-permanent results for clients hoping to eliminate unwanted hair. Here’s a closer look at the process:

How it works

There are many laser devices on the market, but the SPLENDOR X laser, which we use here at The Skin Bar, is unique in its dual approach. This laser utilizes Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths to cater to patients with a wide range of skin tones and types.

Both wavelengths target melanin, seeking out the darkest pigments in your skin. By destroying individual follicles, hairs are unable to regrow.

Who’s a good candidate for laser hair removal?

In the past, laser hair removal was only effective for people with dark hair and light skin. Fortunately, technology has advanced to include a broader clientele. That said, dark hair naturally has more pigment, which attracts these lightwaves. People with dark, coarse strands may see results more quickly than clients with lighter hair.

It’s important to note that people with light blonde or gray hair may not benefit from treatment, as their strands can’t absorb the energy emitted by laser devices.

What are the side effects?

Side effects from laser hair removal include redness, irritation, and inflammation. These treatments expose your skin to concentrated light waves, so you may experience a sensation similar to a mild sunburn. On rare occasions, you may notice changes in your skin tone, but these usually return to normal over time.

How to prep for your laser hair removal session

Preparing your skin for laser hair removal will help you achieve the best results with minimal side effects. Here are our top tips to prep your skin in the days, weeks, and months before your session:

Avoid sun and UV exposure

At least six weeks before your appointment, you’ll need to start limiting sun exposure to the treatment area. Add broad-spectrum sunscreen to your daily skincare routine and cover up at the beach. Sun damage can increase painful side effects. However, even sunless tanner can affect the results of your treatment, so avoid darkening your skin in any manner.

Stop plucking, tweezing, or waxing

Lasers seek out the dark root of each hair, so you’ll want as many intact hairs as possible. Waxing, plucking, and tweezing will reduce the efficacy of your laser hair removal session, so avoid these practices beginning a month before treatment.

Stop using harsh products

Harsh topical products like retinol, benzoyl peroxide, and salicylic acid increase photosensitivity and cause adverse effects during laser hair removal. You’ll want to stop using these items and other potent active ingredients about two weeks before treatment. Similarly, avoid any skincare treatments that you will need to let heal prior to your session, such as microneedling and chemical peels.

Discuss your medications

Medication may also interfere with laser hair removal, so it’s essential to discuss any prescription and over-the-counter medications with your treatment specialist. Common drugs, including antibiotics and acne meds, can cause a range of side effects. Consider making a list of everything you’ve taken in the last year to ensure you’re a good candidate for treatment.

Shave the treatment area

While waxing and plucking are off-limits, you’ll need to shave the treatment area the day before your appointment. Shaving ensures all that light energy is channeled into the hair roots instead of the shafts for the most effective treatment.

Arrive with clean skin

On the day of your appointment, skip the makeup and wash the treatment area with a gentle cleanser to remove any dirt and oil on the surface of your skin. Skip skincare products like moisturizer and deodorant to avoid adverse reactions.

What to expect after laser hair removal

Caring for your skin after laser hair removal is just as important as preparation. Here’s what to know about tending to your post-treatment skin:

Laser hair removal aftercare

Avoiding sun exposure is an essential part of aftercare following laser service. Avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks after treatment, and don’t skimp on the sunscreen. Give your skin time to recover before using harsh products, as well.

A gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer can keep your skin hydrated without irritating it further. If your skin feels inflamed, you can apply a cool compress or a soothing recovery cream to promote healing.

How often will you need laser hair removal?

Many factors affect the number and frequency of laser hair removal treatments. However, here is a general guide to get you started:

  • Face: 6-8 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart

  • Underarms: 6-8 sessions spaced 6-8 weeks apart

  • Chest and back: 5-8 sessions spaced 6-8 weeks apart

  • Bikini area: 5-10 sessions spaced 6-8 weeks apart

  • Legs: 5-6 sessions spaced 6-8 weeks apart

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Over time, genetics and hormonal changes can alter your natural pattern of hair growth. While laser hair removal destroys existing follicles, new ones can appear over time. In some cases, patients might see more growth after stopping birth control.

Additionally, your chosen treatment area will also affect regrowth. For example, the hair on your upper lip may grow faster than the hair on your arms, requiring touch-ups sooner.
