How Long After Microneedling Can I Start Wearing Makeup?
Microneedling is a wildly popular procedure that helps stimulate collagen production and encourage skin rejuvenation, but applying makeup too quickly after the procedure can affect your recovery and results.
Before you apply that foundation, be sure your skin is ready.
Today, we’re discussing when you can wear makeup after microneedling, plus other aftercare tips for optimal healing.
The wait time for putting on makeup after microneedling
After your microneedling session, you might be tempted to cover up any lingering redness with foundation, but doing so can irritate your skin and cause more harm than good. Most experts recommend waiting at least 24 to 48 hours after your microneedling treatment to apply makeup. When you do begin using makeup again, ensure it’s completely clean, and only use sanitary brushes and other applicators.
What if you have sensitive skin?
If you have naturally sensitive skin, you might need to hold off on makeup for a week or more after your session. You should expect your skin to be especially raw, red, and irritated post-treatment. Give it time and baby your outer layer as much as possible to encourage natural healing.
What happens if you put on makeup too soon?
Although microneedling is considered minimally invasive, the procedure creates thousands of tiny holes in your skin. Introducing makeup before you’re properly healed can increase your chances of infection and other adverse effects.
You run the risk of developing granulomas, small clusters of white blood cells and tissue that appear as a response to inflammation and introduction of foreign objects (your makeup).
Another thing to consider is that you’ll experience some degree of dryness and peeling in the days and weeks after treatment. Wearing makeup too soon doesn't just put you at risk of infection, but it also won’t look as good as it will once you’re fully healed.
What products can you use instead of makeup?
Certain products will help you recover from your microneedling treatment faster than others. Proper hydration is one of the most important things to remember, and that applies inside and out. In addition to drinking plenty of water, and investing in a great moisturizer, Here are some ways to encourage adequate skin hydration.
Hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid (HA) might be the holy grail of microneedling aftercare products. It’s incredibly soothing, and it has the added bonus of promoting collagen production. You can start using an HA serum the day after your session to jumpstart the healing process.
This molecule is found naturally in our skin but decreases as we age. The skincare industry uses several forms, so look for products with a high molecular weight. Your treatment specialist can help you find one that’s right for your skin.
Sunscreen
After needling, your skin will be highly susceptible to damage. It’s absolutely essential to protect it from harmful UV rays. Even if you’ll be inside all day, wear high mineral-based SPF sunscreen to defend against ambient light. When you do go outside, be sure to add another layer of sunblock and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
At The Skin Bar, we carry specific SPF makeup that’s safe to wear after a microneedling session. Your esthetician will guide you at your appointment and make sure you’re set up for success before you leave the studio!
Microneedling aftercare regarding makeup
When your skin is ready for makeup and heavier products, be sure to ease back into your routine. Here are some thoughts to consider.
Use hyaluronic acid-rich products
These days, makeup manufacturers are adding hyaluronic acid to many products. Even if you forego a dedicated HA serum, you can find tons of products, particularly foundations and tinted moisturizers, fortified with the acid.
Discuss with your esthetician on recommended brands
Your esthetician is more than a treatment specialist. They should also be your go-to person for helpful advice on skin care products. These pros know the ins and outs of the industry and have usually seen the effects of both proper aftercare and poor treatment in the days following procedures like microneedling.
After all, getting the best results from microneedling isn’t about having good luck. It’s about treating your outer layer with the highest degree of care and taking the right steps throughout your recovery.
